As gas prices rise and EV and PHEV technology improves, switching to a fully or partially electric car can start to make sense.
Especially when you consider how economical and convenient home charging is.
To make this possible, homes can use a NEMA 14-50 outlet, which needs to be installed on a dedicated 50-amp breaker to get the full speed benefit of 40A charging.
One thing to note is that outlets can only take 80% of their capacity so can’t charge at 50A.
If you have a newer home, you might already have one.
So, with level 2 charging at home, how long does it take to charge a Tesla?
How long does it take to charge a Tesla S?
First released in June 2021, the Tesla Model S range was the first mass-market all-electric full-size luxury sedan.
As with all Tesla models, the Tesla S comes in three variants:
- Performance
With a range of around 387 miles, a full charge with level 2 Tesla Model S chargers can take just under 17 hours.
- Long Range
Offering around 402 miles of range, the Long Range Model S should be fully charged in just under 17.5 hours.
- Plaid
With the largest range of over 530 miles, you can expect to spend just under 22 hours charging.
How long does it take to charge a Tesla 3?
Available most recently in January 2024, this is arguably the best-selling full EV in the USA today.
It is available in one of three versions:
- Performance
Offering around 322 miles of range, you can expect to be charging for 10.5 hours with this model.
- Long Range
With the same 322-mile range, charging a Long Range vehicle with Tesla Model 3 chargers will take on average just under 12 hours.
- Standard Range Plus
The Standard Range Plus offers 263 miles of range, possible in just under 9 hours.
Thanks to these much more achievable charging times, it’s not surprising that the Model 3 range is the most popular – as it makes overnight charging while you sleep accessible to anyone with a NEMA 14-50 outlet.
How long does it take to charge a Tesla Model X?
Released in September 2015, the Model X comes in two varieties:
- Performance
Generally provides around 341 miles from just over 17 hours of charging.
- Long Range
Using Tesla Model X chargers, you can expect a range of around 371 miles in just over 18.5 hours of charging.
How long does it take to charge a Tesla Model Y?
Released in March 2019 with a new version (the Model Y Juniper) expected in the first quarter of 2025, the Model Y range comes in three varieties:
- Standard Range rear-wheel drive
With around 244 miles of range expected, you should be able to recharge in around 12.2 hours.
- Long Range
Using Tesla Model Y chargers, the Long Range is expected to give 326 miles in around 16.3 hours.
- Performance
Giving drivers a range of 303 miles in around 15.2 hours of charging using NEMA 14-50 level 2 charging.
How long does it take to supercharge a Tesla?
Compared to the days it may take to recharge using a level 1 charger, level 2 Tesla chargers using NEMA 14-50 outlets are fast, convenient, and cost-effective – making PHEVs/EVs suitable for more drivers than ever before.
There is another option – the Tesla Supercharging network. They can give the following range in 15 minutes:
- Model S: 200 miles
- Model 3: 171 miles
- Model X: 175 miles
- Model Y: 150 miles
While Tesla can offer very fast charging, finding a close, functional, and available Supercharger can be tricky, so it’s best not to rely on this. Likewise, routine supercharging is expensive and can damage battery cells.
For this reason, level 2 charging with NEMA 14-50 outlets wins every time.
