EV Charging times for the Ford range
We have chosen a selection of Ford EV models to analyze the Ford EV charging times, the table assumes the charging times from an empty battery to full charge. Ford chargers come with built-in technology to display the charge status, enhancing user experience.
The Level 1 5-15 EV charger is a regular residential 3-pin plug type, which can be performed using a domestic socket, providing convenience to owners but slower charging times which may only be suitable for Ford PHEV models.
EV Plug Type | Battery Size (kWh) | Charge Power per Hour | EV Charge Time |
Level 1 – 5-15 (regular 3 pin) 120 volts | Ford Mach-E – 69kWh Ford F-150 – 98kWh Ford Escape PHEV – 14.4kWh | 1.5 KW/hour @ 12 amps | Ford Mach-E – 46 hours Ford F-150 – 65 hours Ford Escape PHEV –10 hours |
Level 2 – 14-30 (4 pin electric dryer type) 240 volts | Ford Mach-E – 69kWh Ford F-150 – 98kWh Ford Escape PHEV – 14.4kWh | 5.5 KW/hour @ 24 amps | Ford Mach-E – 12.5 hours Ford F-150 – 18 hours Ford Escape PHEV – 4.5 hours |
Level 2 – 14-50 (4 pin EV Plug) 240 volts | Ford Mach-E – 69kWh Ford F-150 – 98kWh Ford Escape PHEV – 14.4kWh | 9.6 KW/hour @ 40 amps | Ford Mach-E – 7.5 hours Ford F-150 – 10.5 hours Ford Escape PHEV – 4.5 hours |
Connector type and charging rates for Ford EVs
The Ford EV models use the J1772 Type 1 EV charger connector, which is the North American EV charging standard. This is the head of the charger which connects into the Ford car charging port. Depending on the model of Ford EV, the charging rate will vary, this is the maximum alternating current that the cars on-board software will accept, for larger battery models such as the Mach-e and F-150, this is 10.5kW, whereas the smaller battery sized PHEVs such as the Ford Escape has an AC of 3.3kW.
Ford has recently announced that in 2025 they have partnered with Tesla to support the NACS charger connector which will facilitate Ford EV Chargers to be compatible with Tesla Superchargers.
Best charging locations for your Ford EV and PHEV
We speak to a lot of Ford EV owners and the majority of customers we speak to have charging facilities residentially to charge their EV. This is due to the added convenience and flexibility of home charging and lower Ford EV charging costs at overnight cheaper electricity rates.
Using a Ford Level 2 EV charger will reduce the charging times of your EV and therefore lowers the cost of charging significantly. The cost of charging a Ford EV overnight is ~$10 (98kWh battery @ $0.10 p/Kw) for the Ford F-150, comparative to a ~$50 charge at a Level 2 charging station.
However, all EV Ford models are suitable for DC commercial fast charging using CCS standard, as such utilizing higher volt EV charging to further reduce charging times.
The Ford EV range supports home Level 2 EV charging, but also charging at your place of work. The NEMA 14-50 charger connector is also commonly used in campgrounds or RV parks where overnight charging facilities are available.
