Make sure the plug type you choose matches the outlet type you have at home. While many outlets look similar, they are definitely not the same. The one called NEMA 5-15 is the regular 120V household outlet that all home appliances use, while other outlet types, such as the 14-50 or 6-50 (The two most popular EV Charging Outlets), get installed specifically for appliances or EV Chargers that require 240V. That said, there are more 240V outlet types that are commonly used, such as the NEMA 14-30, 6-30, 6-20, L14-30, and more.

The eighth-gen BMW 5 Series arrived in 2023 and includes a pure electric variant called the BMW i5. The BMW i5 EV will compete against its other luxury peers including the Mercedes EQE, Tesla Model S, Lucid Air, as well as the Audi e-tron. BMW offers its all electric version in similar variants to its other electric fleet with an eDrive40, xDrive40, and M50 model options. The base variant has a sizeable 335 hp rear motor, while the other variants (the xDrive40 and M50 model options) have an additional motor to the front axel, providing higher performance and AWD. The i5 M50’s twin motor power will generate 400 kW (536 hp) of combined power. An 80+ kWh battery pack comes standard, providing an electric driving range of around 300 miles. Recommendation: Given the battery and EV owners preference to charge quickly at home and keep your EV battery topped up as quickly possible to maximize your all electric range and reduce range anxiety, we would recommend a level 2 J1772 charger for your BMW i5. The NEMA 14-50 40 amp 9.6 kWh is our recommended EV charger. These will also futureproof you as car batteries get bigger. Charge times are fast. From a 50% battery (in practice when most EV owners re-charge), the car will be fully charged in around 4.5 hours with a NEMA 14-50 40 amp 9.6 kWh BMW i5 EV charger.
