Make sure the plug type you choose matches the outlet type you have at home. While many outlets look similar, they are definitely not the same. The one called NEMA 5-15 is the regular 120V household outlet that all home appliances use, while other outlet types, such as the 14-50 or 6-50 (The two most popular EV Charging Outlets), get installed specifically for appliances or EV Chargers that require 240V. That said, there are more 240V outlet types that are commonly used, such as the NEMA 14-30, 6-30, 6-20, L14-30, and more.

The Toyota BZ4X concept was introduced into the market in April 2021. However only debuted in the EV market when this concept was co-developed, alongside the Subaru Solterra, into a battery-electric model in 2024. The all-electric SUV is the only Toyota EV model and has become one of the most popular mid-size electric vehicles in the U.S; it can be charged with a Level 1 or Level 2 J1772 EV charger at 9.6 kilowatts per hour (40 amps) on a 240-volt outlet. The Toyota BZ4X is also compatible with DC Fast Charging (Level 3), which significantly reduces charging time compared to Level 1 and Level 2 chargers. There are many questions on the minds of prospective buyers around EV charging, we have produced this guide to answer all questions on Toyota BZ4X charging.

For battery preservation, the ideal charging range of the battery is from 20% to 80%, as charging tends to slow outside this range to protect the battery and avoid potentially reduced performance. Under optimal conditions, such as moderate ambient temperatures and a battery state of charge within the ideal range, the charging duration and speed can be more efficient.
To improve the charging speed and charge time of your Toyota BZ4X, an upgrade from a manufacturer level 1 (120 volt) to a level 2 (240 volt) charger is recommended. This charger offers the fastest EV charging speeds and ensures that you’re prepared for your next electric vehicle as well. Charging times are significantly improved, with a NEMA 14-50, 40-amp, 9.6 kWh charger fully charging the vehicle in approximately 10.5 hours. We offer a variety of level 2, 240-volt EV chargers and EV plug types, allowing Toyota BZ4X owners to benefit from the convenience of charging from home, cheaper overnight electricity rates (typically 40% in most U.S. states), and the cleaner peace of electric driving.
The Toyota BZ4X can be charged with a Type 1 J1772 charger connector at home, work, or a public charging point. The car’s software automatically detects the range of available charge and does not allow the battery to overcharge. The vehicle’s peak alternating current (AC) charge rate is 6.6kW/hour. Additionally, the Toyota BZ4X supports fast charging options, including DC Fast Charging, which can significantly reduce charging times.
At our store, we offer a variety of plug-in options for Level 1, 120-volt, and Level 2, 240-volt BZ4X EV chargers and EV plug types. Many new Toyota BZ4X EV owners are seeking faster charging solutions, and our most popular, the 14-50 EV plug, offers 240-volt 40 amp charging, which is the fastest option for BZ4X owners. Another popular charger type we offer is the 14-30 EV plug, which also offers 240-volt charging at a 24 amp rate, which is suitable for charging in outlets that many garages already have for heavy-duty appliances, such as dryers.
The Toyota BZ4X can be charged either at home or at work, depending on the owner’s preference. Most EV owners prefer to charge at home as a result of the lower costs of home EV charging and added convenience. That said, there are numerous nationwide facilities that offer level 2 EV charging stations, such as shopping plazas, offices, and government facilities. EV chargers are also suitable for campgrounds, RV parks, and other overnight locations, where the 14-50 outlet is most common.
Toyota BZ4X owners can access one year of complimentary, unlimited charging at EVgo stations by linking their EVgo account to their Toyota app account.
Depending on variables such as the location (residential or commercial), the State you are in, time of day, or charging power, this will impact the cost of charging the Toyota BZ4X. Below are the costs depending on location. In California, peak electricity is more expensive than the U.S. current averages for electricity of 20 ¢/kWh used in the calculation below.
Toyota BZ4X owners can benefit from one year of unlimited complimentary charging at EVgo stations, which can significantly reduce charging costs.

You can charge your Toyota BZ4X at all level 1, level 2, and CCS commercial charging stations.
The fastest available charging option is a 32 amp or 40 amp, 240-volt charger, which we offer for the NEMA 14-50 and 6-50 outlets.
The Toyota BZ4X uses a J1772 Type 1 connector. Toyota EVs do not currently have an option to use a NACS charger connector.
Although compatible with Level 1 chargers, the 47-hour charge duration will limit your ability to fully charge the vehicle and subsequently restrict its usability.
The most popular charging option for the Toyota BZ4X is the Level 2 14-50 240-volt EV charger.
A level 2 240-volt charger will allow owners to take advantage of favourable charging times, costs, and added convenience, which are limited by level 1 charging options. The ability to complete a charge at overnight lower-cost rates will allow EV owners to fully benefit from all factors of electric driving.
The Toyota BZ4X onboard charger (power acceptance rate) is currently limited to 6.6 kilowatts per hour. Future versions may have higher power acceptance settings to enable faster charging.
You can manage your Toyota BZ4X charging using the Toyota app. The app allows you to find and initiate public charging, manage home charging, and track charging status and costs.
All-electric vehicles rely solely on electric power and require charging at home or public stations, with options like Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 charging. Plug-in hybrids, on the other hand, combine electric power with a gasoline engine, offering flexibility in charging and fuel use.

Electrician recommended this EV charger for our new Toyota bz4x. Delayed charging a nice feature. Very robust and the cable length comes in useful. Some nice adds on in the package such as the cable protector when I run the charger under the garage to the driveway.

We shopped around for an EV charger for our new Toyota bZ4x. Customer service was excellent in terms of guiding us through the options. We landed on a 14-50 EV plug type and the customer service rep was very knowledgeable. Installed and fitted, working well. Not sure about the cable protector since we are not using it

Fast, easy to use, easy to set up. No problems and fast charging. We got the 14-50 type level 2 per the car dealership recommendation and it’s working well. The charge matches the display in our car.
