Choosing the right plug for your home

Make sure the plug type you choose matches the outlet type you have at home. While many outlets look similar, they are definitely not the same. The one called NEMA 5-15 is the regular 120V household outlet that all home appliances use, while other outlet types, such as the 14-50 or 6-50 (The two most popular EV Charging Outlets), get installed specifically for appliances or EV Chargers that require 240V. What is the current use of 14-30 EV outlets?

A large proportion of American households have existing 14-30 outlets typically at the back of their garage used for washer or dryer outlets.   Given their availability, EV and plug-in hybrid owners have made use of existing outlets.

For plug-in hybrid vehicles, a NEMA 14-30 at a level 2 charge such as 24 amps is well suited for EV charging.  It will charge a typical plug-in hybrid within 2-3 hours depending on battery size.  For pure electric vehicles, smaller battery-size vehicles such as a bz4x are well suited to a 14-30 EV Charger.  For larger vehicles such as a Ford F-150 with a 98 kilowatt batter, charging would take around 16 hours for a full charge.

A NEMA 14-30 can supply up to 24 amps to the car’s battery per hour of charging.  This equates to  5.76 kilowatts per hour (240V x 24A = 5.76 kW).

A 14-30 will provide around 20-23 miles of driving range per hour of charging (+/-15% depending on the vehicle, battery life, and temperatures).  Plug-in hybrids will typically benefit from the full charge of power per hour since the acceptance rate (how much power a plug-in hybrid can take) is increasing.

If the outlet is routinely used for other purposes, it is better to get a separate, dedicated outlet installed.   Plugging and unplugging 240-volt outlets is not recommended.  The outlet should also be inspected by a licensed electrician prior to use for EV charging since the plug outlet will be providing 2-8 hours typically of continuous charging, which is longer than current or prior use of the plug.

Yes.  We provide  NACS (SAE J3400) level 2 EV chargers and J1772 EV Chargers.   NACS EV charging cables are thinner due to the cooling technology and so are easier to maneuver.  All of the key EV manufacturers in the U.S, South Korea and Japan have announced plans to move to the NACS connector, which will open up Tesla Superchargers to non Tesla vehicles.

    I have an Audi A7e PHEV which has the same drivetrain as the Q5e. The Audi charger is great but limits its amp draw on 120V so that a level 1 charge can take 16-19 hours. I have to commute each day so virtually unusable. This unit is smaller, easily fits in the trunk and charges much quicker. We also saved $ by using the existing power outlet in the garage, avoiding an electrician and a panel upgrade.
