Choosing the right plug for your home

Make sure the plug type you choose matches the outlet type you have at home. While many outlets look similar, they are definitely not the same. The one called NEMA 5-15 is the regular 120V household outlet that all home appliances use, while other outlet types, such as the 14-50 or 6-50 (The two most popular EV Charging Outlets), get installed specifically for appliances or EV Chargers that require 240V. That said, there are more 240V outlet types that are commonly used, such as the NEMA 14-30, 6-30, 6-20, L14-30, and more.

Overview Kia EV6 Charger

The Kia EV 6 is the iconic debut EV from Kia.  The ride quality, interior and electric range, as well as price point, combine to form a competitive all electric vehicle in one package.

Kia chargers are in high demand.  Kia EV owners seek faster and more flexible EV charging solutions.   Many Kia EV owners have bought their vehicle or are lease vehicles and seek faster Kia EV6 chargers than conventional level 1 EV chargers.  Many find commercial charging stations are broken, unreliable or too inconveniently located.

The current Kia EV6, for residential EV charging, is an EV charger that works at level 1 (power level) J1772 (connector type for connection to the charging port) or a level 2 J1722 EV charger.   The charging rate is 9.6 kilowatts per hour, which is the maximum charging rate for a Kia EV6 charger at 240 volt of charging.

EV Charging times for Kia EV6 Charger

Below are the charge times for a Kia EV6 charge from an empty battery. The table shows charge times at different level 1 chargers (generally regular 3 pin residential outlet) and level 2 chargers (generally 4 pin 240 volt outlets).

Plug Type
Level 1 – 5-15 (regular 3 pin) 120 volts
Level 2 – 14-30 (4 pin electric dryer type) 240 volts
Level – 14-50 (4 pin EV Plug) 240 volts

5.5 KW/hour @ 24 amps
9.6 KW/hour @ 40 amps
EV Charge Time

The above table is for Kia ev6 chargers assuming an empty battery i.e. 0%. In practice, most EV owners will charge around 50% of battery, in which case charge times will be 50% of the times in the table.

Connector type and charging rates

The current Kia EV6 is a J1772 type.   This refers to the charger head that connects into the receptacle in your vehicle.  The maximum alternating current (AC) charge rate is around 10KW/hour, which is 43 amps 208-240 volts. A J1772 EV charger whether at a business location or residential location will be compatible with a Kia EV6.

Kia has announced that it will switch from the J1772 to NACS in the future but the dates for a NACS connector has not been confirmed.

Best charging locations for a Kia EV6 Charger

EV owners by far and away prefer to charge at home with the convenience of home level 1 or level 2 charging – this is called destination charging since one can charge where you land/park (so to speak).

Charging an EV is much cheaper at home.  We always recommend residential aka destination charging if that is an option.  It is much cheaper, approximately 50% cheaper compared to commercial charging locations.

Most commercial EV charging stations are compatible.  In your app, look for commercial CCS 1 EV chargers.  Your Kia EV 6 will not charge and is not compatible with CHAdeMO commercial chargers.  It is problematic due to connectivity issues, compatibility issues and broken EV chargers.   You may also charge in commercial locations (generally level 2 EV charging) plugged in when at level 2 EV charging stations that are business owners (AirBnB, MedSpas, Hotels etc.).   Of most EV charger types, the 14-50 EV chargers can also be used in campgrounds and RV parks.  14-50 EV plug types are increasingly installed in new homes or by other EV owners.

Cost of charging a Kia EV6 Charger

Kia EV6 charging enjoys a variety of options.  There is a huge variance in pricing between commercial and residential EV chargers, especially between level 2 and DC charging.  The major factors are time of day, State and if any EV tariffs are available.  The below table shows charging costs depending on home (residential) or commercial.  The tables use U.S. current averages for residential electricity supply of 20 ¢/kWh.  Below assumes 252-mile version Kia EV6 (rather than the long range 310-mile version).

Place
Home (empty to full)* Commercial Chargers **
Average
$15 $30-$38
Cost Cost/Mile
$0.06¢ / mile $0.14¢ / mile

* Assumes 20 ¢/kWh average U.S. tariff.  Residential tariffs vary by State

** Assumes 50 ¢/kWh tariff for most Level 2 (AC) or Level 3 (DC) network EV chargers
