Choosing the right plug for your home

Make sure the plug type you choose matches the outlet type you have at home. While many outlets look similar, they are definitely not the same. The one called NEMA 5-15 is the regular 120V household outlet that all home appliances use, while other outlet types, such as the 14-50 or 6-50 (The two most popular EV Charging Outlets), get installed specifically for appliances or EV Chargers that require 240V. That said, there are more 240V outlet types that are commonly used, such as the NEMA 14-30, 6-30, 6-20, L14-30, and more.

Customer Reviews

  1. Valerie Martin

We got this portable fast charger for our new Rav 4 plug in. So far so good. The RAV has a good battery charge speed, so a faster power charger like the 14-50 we got makes sense. We are getting to full charge in less than 4 hours!

  2. Tom W.

We went with these guys due to the extra longer cable so we don’t need an extender or to move our plug socket with an electrician. Charges super fast on our new RAV 4. Product is solid and starts charging as soon as we plug in.

  3. Michelle Barczak

Overall good product and does what it says. Would prefer the indicator lights to be bigger so we can see it is charging from a distance. We ran over our old charger and this charges just as fast for our RAV 4

  4. Gerianne Vallas

Bought this as an extra level 2 portable charger for our RAV 4 plug in hybrid. We use this and also have a wall box. This charges just as fast and seems to kick in quicker. Has a nice thick cord and charges fast. Nice handle for a good grip.

  5. Jane H.

We had an existing 14-30 outlet in the garage so we got this portable for charging. No plug changes – perfect! Easy set-up and with a 14-30 it is taking around 4 hours

  6. Hannah B

After shopping around and looking at other EV chargers, we landed on the AEFA brand. Very sturdy and they told us it is the charger used by a German car company for its EV. We use the protective cover since we run the cable under the garage. Our Rav 4 is charging twice as fast compared to the trickle cord.

  7. Tariq

So far so good. Great customer service. We had planned on using an existing plug but realized it was not safe. We landed on a good option with the AEFA chargers for Toyota Rav 4 (the original no longer worked). Took a few days but they may have been the bad weather. Upon unpacking, we realized it came with a few nice extras. Not providing 5 stars yet since we have only owned for a few months

Why upgrade your Toyota Rav4 EV Chargers

Upgrading your EV charger from a Level 1 manufacturer charger to a Level 2 240-volt charger will allow you to benefit from quicker charging speeds, significantly reducing the charge time depending on the vehicle model and charger type, as per the table above. Frequently Asked  Questions
Can I charge my Toyota Rav4 Prime Plug-In Hybrid at a commercial charging station?
Minus Icon Plus Icon

The Toyota Rav4 Prime Plug-In Hybrid can be charged at Level 2 commercial charging stations. It cannot be charged with DC fast chargers.

What is the fastest charger for a Toyota Rav4 Prime Plug-In Hybrid?
Minus Icon Plus Icon

The fastest charger type for a Toyota Rav4 Prime Plug-In Hybrid is the 32ampt or 40amp Level 2, 240-volt charger, which is offered in NEMA 14-50 and 6-50 charger types.

What connector type does a Toyota Rav4 Prime Plug-In Hybrid use?
Minus Icon Plus Icon

The Toyota Rav4 Prime Plug-In Hybrid is charged using a Type 1 J1772 connector. Current models are not compatible with the NACS connector unless they use an adapter.

Is a level 1 EV charger sufficient for charging?
Minus Icon Plus Icon

This will depend on the owner’s lifestyle and preference; however, it is typically not, as the Level 1 charge time for the Toyota Rav4 Prime PHEV is 12 hours. It is unlikely the owner will fully benefit from a full 42-electric-mile range daily if a Level 1 charger is used. Plus off-peak or super-off-peak charging hours normally don’t exceed 6 to 8 hours, so they’d spend more on electricity.

Minus Icon Plus Icon

The most popular EV charger is the Level 2 14-50 240-volt charger, as it offers the fastest charging time and can supply a full charge in 2.5 hours with 6.6kW/h or 5.5 hours with 3.3kW/h alternating current.

What is the main benefit of level 2 EV charging?
Minus Icon Plus Icon

The main benefits of Level 2 EV charging are the speed of charging, lower charging costs at overnight rates, and extra convenience. This vehicle’s 42-mile all-electric range is greater than that of the standard hybrid, so owners generally prefer a Level 2 EV charger to fully benefit from this range.

Why can’t I charge my Toyota Rav4 Prime Plug-In Hybrid faster?
Minus Icon Plus Icon

The Toyota Rav4 Prime Plug-In Hybrid onboard charger is currently limited to 3.3 kW/h or 6.6 kW/h, depending on the model. This may be increased in future models to facilitate faster charging times.
