Choosing the right plug for your home

Make sure the plug type you choose matches the outlet type you have at home. While many outlets look similar, they are definitely not the same. The one called NEMA 5-15 is the regular 120V household outlet that all home appliances use, while other outlet types, such as the 14-50 or 6-50 (The two most popular EV Charging Outlets), get installed specifically for appliances or EV Chargers that require 240V. That said, there are more 240V outlet types that are commonly used, such as the NEMA 14-30, 6-30, 6-20, L14-30, and more.

The VW ID 4 has become one of the most popular mid-size all-electric vehicles and is an established brand in the EV field competing with the Ford Mach-e, KIA EV 6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5. The VW ID 4 charger type is a J1772, Type 1 charging port which is currently the most widespread charging port type and the U.S. standard. We speak with owners of new and used VW ID 4s who are looking for replacement chargers, upgrades or a specific EV plug type that the manufacturer does not provide.

Volkswagen ID 4 charging time

A recurring question for owners of the Volkswagen ID 4 is the charging time and ways to improve the charging speed of their Volkswagen ID 4. We put the table below to summarize charging times, charging levels (1 or 2) and the common EV plug receptacle types for J1772 EV chargers. There may be some variation but will be broadly accurate.

Why upgrade your charger?

Many of our requests are for EV plug types that do not come with the manufacturer-supplied EV Charger. Owners seek to upgrade to common plug types such as the NEMA 14-50 (EV receptacle) and NEMA 6-50 (EV receptacle) level 2 EV Charging solutions. Sometimes it is an upgrade to a specific plug type. These maximize charging speeds so that owners can charge their car overnight during the cheapest grid electricity times (super off-peak), with a full charge only costing around $6-11 for a full charge.

Charger length

We supply and make a range of cable lengths, which are the 25-foot long and 32-foot long cable options. No more stretched cables, reaching over/under objects to make the connection work or re-parking the car to get a few feet closer to the EV Charger. Where you can charge? The VW ID 4 can be charged in residential locations, multi-unit dwellings, as well as commercial locations such as City Halls, business premises and outlets. At residential locations, the charge port is the J1772 Type 1. At most commercial locations where DC fast charging is available, then the DC charge port is CCS 1.

Home charger options

Homeowners usually select between currently available 240-volt plugs in their garage or have an electrician fit a dedicated EV plug. The level 2 NEMA 14-50 is the most popular EV charger we sell for the VW ID. 4

Why choose EV chargers?

Purchasing from EV Chargers is buying from one of America's most experienced level 1 and level 2 residential EV charger companies in the U.S. Our EV Chargers come with built-in circuit disrupters/breakers, a high sensitivity leak fault detection feature, long-distance oversized green oval charging indicator light and local U.S. based customer service. We provide free U.S. and Canada shipping and have 4.3 Amazon star reviews despite all the complexities of EV charging (people blame the charger when often there are reasons - the car, the plug wiring, the circuit breaker or the power of the breaker).

  1. Gabe B.

Bought one of the chargers for a 6-50 plug that our electrician installed. Easy to use and easy to set-up. Powerful charger.

  2. John H. (verified owner)

Plug and go! It worked perfectly out of the box and it has been in use for 9 solid months. No issues at all!

  3. JAMES B. (verified owner)

This is better than expected. It’s nice to be able to select tour desired charging amps and delay the charging time if you desire. Very happy with this purchase so far!

  4. Jacob K. (verified owner)

Is this a real company? The numbers listed don’t get to any company reps. The product I received was faulty, and I need it replaced but all numbers lead nowhere and so there’s no path for remediation.
